Take a short drive to High Island to visit Smith Oaks Rookery, a part of the Houston Audubon.. 2205 Old Mexico Road, High Island, TX 77623. Roseate Spoonbills, Great Egret, Tricolored Heron, Little Blue Heron and many other species fly through this protected region. This area is perfect for nesting and raising young birds. ‘Birders’ from in and out of state come to watch the migrations of the many species traveling through our little slice of heaven. A little further down Hwy 124, you’ll come across FM 1985. Eleven miles down, lies the 34,000 acre Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, FM 1985, Anahuac, TX 77514. This is another great area for birding, hiking, photography & wildlife watching.
